Speed up to clear the crossing before they step out

You must not cross or straddle it to overtake

Maintain your speed — they can go around you
Move to the left and stop if necessary to let it pass

Only check them when reversing
Check mirrors regularly, especially before changing speed or direction

Open the door and drag your foot along the ground
Pump the brake pedal rapidly, use engine braking, and use the handbrake gently
“DRAG YOUR FOOT?! On the road? At speed? Like Fred Flintstone?! I— I can't. I actually can't. This is the worst answer I have ever read in 35 years of instruction.”
To overtake slower traffic on the left
Only in an emergency or breakdown
“The hard shoulder. For overtaking. On a motorway. You're describing a crime. Several crimes, actually. I've written down your name.”
