Based on analysis of L-Plate practice data, here are the mistakes that cost learners the most marks on the Irish theory test.
Mistake 1: Not Reading the Question Carefully
The single biggest cause of wrong answers. Questions using “NOT”, “EXCEPT”, or “ALWAYS” catch thousands of people who skim-read and pick the first answer that looks right.
Fix: Read every question twice before answering. Circle (mentally) any negative or absolute words.
Mistake 2: Ignoring Legal Matters
Most learners focus on road signs and rules of the road, which feel practical and relatable. Legal matters (penalty points, insurance, licensing) feel dry and boring — so people skip them. This category appears on virtually every test.
Fix: Dedicate specific practice sessions to Legal Matters.
Mistake 3: Skipping Mock Tests
Practising individual questions is very different from sitting a timed 40-question exam. Many learners feel confident from practice but panic under exam conditions.
Fix: Take at least 3 full mock tests before the real exam.
Mistake 4: Studying Only Your Strengths
It’s human nature to practise what you’re already good at. But the test pulls from all 8 categories, and one weak area can sink your score.
Fix: Check your category scores in L-Plate and spend extra time on the weakest ones.
Mistake 5: Cramming the Night Before
Your brain needs time to consolidate information. Cramming creates an illusion of knowledge that crumbles under exam pressure.
Fix: Spread study over 2–3 weeks, 20 minutes a day.
