EDT stands for Essential Driver Training. It is a series of 12 mandatory driving lessons you must complete with an RSA-approved driving instructor (ADI) before you can take your driving test.
What Do EDT Lessons Cover?
The 12 lessons follow a structured programme:

- Changing direction and turning
- Pedestrian crossings and roundabouts
- Anticipation and reaction
- Sharing the road
- Driving in traffic
- Correct road positioning

Cost
EDT lessons typically cost EUR 30-50 per lesson, with packages often available at a discount. Total cost is usually EUR 360-600 for all 12 lessons.
Timeline
You can start EDT lessons as soon as you have your learner permit. Most people complete them over 3-6 months. All 12 must be completed before you can apply for your driving test.
