Not all theory test questions are equal. Based on data from hundreds of thousands of L-Plate practice answers, some questions and categories have dramatically higher failure rates than others.
The Hardest Categories
- Legal Matters & Documents — Penalty points, insurance requirements, NCT rules. These are the questions most people haven’t encountered in real life
- Hazard Awareness — Safe following distances, junction priorities, adverse weather. The wording on these questions is often deliberately tricky
- Vulnerable Road Users — Questions about cyclists, pedestrians, and children. People often assume they know the answers but get caught by specifics
Types of Questions That Catch People
- “NOT” questions: “Which of these is NOT correct?” — people read too quickly and pick a correct answer instead of the incorrect one
- Number-specific questions: Exact penalty points, distance requirements, speed limits
- Similar-sounding options: When two answers look very similar, the test is testing precise knowledge
How to Tackle Hard Questions
- Read every question twice — especially look for words like NOT, EXCEPT, ALWAYS, NEVER
- Eliminate obviously wrong answers first, then choose between the remaining options
- Practise the hard categories specifically in L-Plate practice mode
