The Irish driver theory test has 40 multiple-choice questions. You have 45 minutes to complete them, and you need 35 correct answers (87.5%) to pass.
Where Do the Questions Come From?
The 40 questions on your test are randomly drawn from a bank of approximately 1,456 questions maintained by the RSA (Road Safety Authority). This means every test is different — you can’t predict which specific questions will come up.
Question Categories
Questions are pulled from 8 categories:
- Rules of the Road
- Road Signs
- Hazard Awareness
- Legal Matters & Documents
- Technical Knowledge
- Vulnerable Road Users
- Motorway Driving
- Alcohol & Drugs
You’ll get questions from all 8 categories, which is why you can’t just study one topic and hope for the best.
Question Format
Each question is multiple-choice with 4 answer options. Only one answer is correct. Some questions include images (particularly road sign questions), and some use tricky wording like “Which of these is NOT correct?”
