Irish speed limits are measured in kilometres per hour (km/h). Here are all the limits you need to know for the theory test and real driving.
Default Speed Limits
- Built-up areas: 50 km/h
- Regional roads (R roads): 80 km/h
- National roads (N roads): 100 km/h
- Motorways (M roads): 120 km/h
Special Speed Limits
- School zones: 30 km/h during school hours
- Housing estates: Often 30 km/h (as signed)
- Special speed limit zones: As indicated by signs
Theory Test Tips
Speed limit questions appear frequently. The most common mistake is confusing national road (100 km/h) and motorway (120 km/h) limits. Remember: motorway is always 120, national is 100.
