The Irish theory test covers 8 categories. Questions are randomly drawn from all of them, so you cannot afford to skip any.
1. Road Signs (~250 questions)
The largest category. Learn the shape-colour code: circles give orders, triangles warn, rectangles inform. Study road signs.
2. Rules of the Road (~300 questions)
Roundabouts, speed limits, right of way, overtaking. The most heavily tested category. Study rules of the road.
3. Hazard Awareness (~200 questions)
Fog, ice, aquaplaning, school zones. Tests situational judgement, not just facts. Study hazard awareness.
4. Legal Documents (~150 questions)
Learner permits, NCT, insurance, penalty points. Lots of specific numbers to memorise. Study legal documents.
5. Vehicle Technical (~150 questions)
Tyres, brakes, lights, ABS, oil checks. Practical vehicle knowledge. Study vehicle technical.
6. Alcohol and Drugs (~100 questions)
Blood alcohol limits, drug driving, consequences. Critical safety category. Study alcohol and drugs.
7. Motorway Driving (~100 questions)
Speed limits, joining, breakdowns, restrictions. Important even if you have never been on a motorway. Study motorway driving.
8. Vulnerable Road Users (~150 questions)
Cyclists, pedestrians, children, horse riders. Passing distances and pedestrian crossings. Study vulnerable road users.
