If you want to ride a motorcycle in Ireland, you need to pass the motorcycle theory test before getting your learner permit.
Same Format, Different Questions
The motorcycle theory test has the same structure as the car test:
- 40 multiple-choice questions
- 35 correct to pass (87.5%)
- 45 minutes
- EUR 45 fee
The difference is that questions are tailored to motorcycle riding: protective clothing, cornering technique, visibility, and motorcycle-specific road safety.
Key Topics for Motorcyclists
- Protective clothing requirements (helmet, gloves, boots, hi-vis)
- Cornering and braking technique on two wheels
- Visibility and positioning on the road
- Pillion passenger rules
- Motorcycle-specific road signs
Many questions overlap with the car theory test (road signs, rules of the road, hazard awareness), so studying with L-Plate covers a large portion of the motorcycle test content too.
