Unlike the driving test where you wait nervously for the examiner to speak, the theory test gives you your result immediately. The moment you click "Finish", your score appears on screen.
What Happens When You Finish the Test
- Your score appears on the computer screen — you’ll see your total (e.g. 37/40) and whether you passed or failed
- You get a printed score report — the test centre prints a breakdown showing your performance in each of the 8 categories
- If you passed: you get a certificate — this is the official document you need to apply for your learner permit at the NDLS
- The certificate is valid for 2 years — you must apply for your learner permit within this window
How to Read Your Score Report
Your score report shows how many questions you got right in each of the 8 official categories:
- Rules of the Road
- Legal Matters
- Safe Driving
- Road Signs
- Vehicle Controls
- Motorway Driving
- Pedestrians & Cyclists
- Technical Checks
You need 35 out of 40 correct to pass. The report won’t tell you which specific questions you got wrong, but it shows which categories had errors. This is gold for retake preparation.
If You Passed
Congratulations — here’s your next steps checklist:
- Keep your certificate safe — you’ll need it at the NDLS office
- Book an NDLS appointment — apply for your learner permit as soon as possible
- Start your 12 EDT lessons — you can begin these once you have your learner permit
- Don’t wait 2 years — your theory cert expires, and you’d have to resit the test
If You Failed
Don’t panic. 53% of candidates fail — you’re in the majority. Here’s what to do:
- Take a photo of your score report — you’ll want this for targeted studying
- Identify your weakest categories — focus your next study block there
- Rebook immediately — there’s no waiting period between attempts
- Take more mock tests — timed mock tests are the single best predictor of passing
Can You Get Your Results Online?
No. Theory test results are only available at the test centre on the day. There is no online portal to check results, and the RSA does not email or post results. If you lose your certificate, you’ll need to contact Prometric (the test provider) for a replacement.
How Long Is the Theory Test Certificate Valid?
Your theory test certificate is valid for 2 years from the date you pass. If you don’t apply for your learner permit within that window, you’ll need to resit and pass the theory test again.
