The time limit for the Irish theory test is 45 minutes for 40 questions. That works out to 1 minute and 7.5 seconds per question — which is actually quite generous.
Why Time Management Matters
Most people don’t run out of time. The real risk is rushing through too quickly and making careless mistakes. With only 5 wrong answers allowed, every mistake counts.
Time Management Strategy
- First pass (20–25 minutes): Answer all 40 questions. If you’re unsure about one, make your best guess and flag it to return to
- Second pass (10–15 minutes): Go back to flagged questions. Re-read them carefully
- Final check (5 minutes): Scan through all answers one last time. Make sure you haven’t left any blank
Common Time Mistakes
- Rushing: Finishing in 10 minutes and submitting without checking. Slow down
- Overthinking: Spending 3+ minutes on one question. Move on and come back
- Not reading carefully: Missing words like “NOT” or “EXCEPT” because you skimmed too fast
Practise Under Time Pressure
L-Plate mock tests use the exact same 45-minute timer. Taking timed mocks trains your internal clock so the real test feels natural.
