The unknown is what makes people nervous. If you’ve never set foot in a Prometric test centre, the whole process can feel intimidating. It shouldn’t. Here’s exactly what happens on theory test day, from the moment you walk through the door to the moment you get your result.
Before You Leave the House
Double-check three things before you head out:
- Valid photo ID — passport, driving licence, or Public Services Card. No ID, no test. They will not make exceptions.
- Booking confirmation — the email from theorytest.ie with your booking reference number. Having it on your phone is fine.
- Know where you’re going — Google the test centre address the night before. Plan for traffic and parking.
Arrival (15 Minutes Early)
Arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled time. If you arrive late, you may lose your slot entirely — and your €45 fee. The reception area is small and functional. Do not expect a waiting lounge.
At the desk, you’ll hand over your photo ID and confirm your booking reference. Staff will verify your identity and give you a brief explanation of the test rules.
The Rules
- No phones. You must leave your mobile in a locker or with reception. Zero tolerance.
- No bags or notes. Nothing goes into the test room except you and your ID.
- No talking. Other candidates may be at different stages of their tests.
- Raise your hand if you have a technical issue. Do not try to fix the computer yourself.
The Test Itself
You’ll sit at a computer terminal with a touchscreen. The interface is straightforward:
- 40 multiple-choice questions appear one at a time
- Each question has 4 answer options — tap the one you think is correct
- A 45-minute countdown timer runs in the corner of the screen
- You can flag questions and come back to them before submitting
- You need 35 out of 40 to pass
The questions are drawn randomly from all 8 categories, so you’ll jump between road signs, rules of the road, hazards, and everything else. This is exactly why practising with timed mock tests is so important — you get used to the format before the real thing.
Time Management
45 minutes for 40 questions gives you just over a minute per question. That’s plenty of time if you’ve studied, but it’s not unlimited. Here’s a strategy:
- First pass (30 minutes): Answer every question you’re confident about. Flag anything you’re unsure of.
- Second pass (10 minutes): Go back to flagged questions. Eliminate obviously wrong answers and make your best choice.
- Final review (5 minutes): Check you haven’t left anything unanswered.
Do not spend 3 minutes agonising over one question. Flag it, move on, come back later.
Common Tricks to Watch For
- Double negatives: Questions with NOT or NEVER in them trip people up. Read slowly.
- Similar answers: Two options may look almost identical. The difference is usually one word.
- Absolute language: Words like ALWAYS, NEVER, and ONLY are often (but not always) wrong answers.
If you’ve been practising with L-Plate’s category practice, you’ll recognise these patterns. Brendan has been training you for exactly this.
Getting Your Result
This is the good bit: you get your result immediately. The moment you submit your test, the screen shows your score and whether you passed or failed. No waiting, no post.
If you pass, you’ll receive a theory test certificate — either printed at the centre or sent digitally. This certificate is valid for 2 years and is required to apply for your learner permit at the NDLS.
If you fail, the screen shows which categories you were weakest in. Head straight to your L-Plate dashboard, focus on those categories, and rebook when you’re ready.
If You Fail
53% of people fail the theory test. It is not the end of the world. You can rebook immediately at theorytest.ie (another €45), and the next available slot is typically 2–3 weeks out. Use that time wisely: take our readiness assessment to find your weak spots and drill them until you’re consistently scoring 37+ on mock tests.
