Theory Test Day — What to Expect, Bring, and Do
A complete walkthrough of test day — from arriving at the Prometric centre to getting your results, including what to bring and what happens if you fail.
Before You Leave Home
Your test appointment confirmation email lists everything, but here's a checklist:
- Photo ID — Passport, current driving licence, or national ID card. This is non-negotiable. If you don't have valid photo ID, you won't be allowed to take the test and you'll lose your fee.
- Appointment confirmation — Have it on your phone or printed. You'll need your booking reference number.
- Arrive 15-20 minutes early — You need to check in, store your belongings, and get settled. Late arrivals may be turned away.
- No phones in the test room — You'll be asked to leave your phone, bags, and other items in a locker. The centre provides lockers.
At the Test Centre
Here's the step-by-step process:
- Check-in at reception — Show your photo ID and booking reference. They'll verify your identity.
- Store your belongings — Everything goes in a locker: phone, wallet, bag, watch, notes. You only take the locker key in with you.
- Enter the test room — You'll be seated at a computer terminal with a privacy screen. There may be other people taking different tests simultaneously.
- Tutorial screen — Before the real test starts, you get a short tutorial showing how the interface works. This doesn't count towards your time.
- 45-minute test — 40 questions appear one at a time. You can skip and return to any question. A timer in the corner shows remaining time.
- Submit and wait — When you've answered all 40, you submit. Results appear on screen within seconds.
Tips for the Test Itself
- Read every question twice — Watch for words like "except", "not", "always", "never". They change the meaning completely.
- Read all four options — Don't jump at the first answer that looks right. Often two answers are very similar, with one being more precise.
- Skip and return — If a question stumps you, skip it. Come back with fresh eyes after answering the rest. Your first instinct is usually right for recalled facts.
- Don't change answers — Unless you're absolutely certain you made a mistake, your first answer is statistically more likely to be correct.
- Use all your time — Don't rush to finish early. Review your answers. People who use the full 45 minutes score higher on average.
Getting Your Results
Results appear on your computer screen immediately after you submit:
- Pass (35-40/40) — You'll see a pass certificate on screen. A paper certificate is printed at reception. Keep this safe — you need it to apply for your learner permit at the NDLS.
- Fail (0-34/40) — You'll see your score and which categories you were weakest in. You can rebook immediately. There's no waiting period between attempts, but you'll need to pay the €45 fee again.
Your theory test certificate is valid for 2 years. You must apply for your learner permit within this period.
What If I Fail?
Failing is not the end of the world. About 32% of people fail, so you're not alone.
- Check your category scores — The results slip shows which categories let you down. Focus your restudy there.
- Rebook quickly — Don't let it drag out. Study your weak areas for a week, then rebook.
- Don't be discouraged — Many people who fail first time pass comfortably on their second attempt. You already know the test format and environment, which removes a lot of anxiety.
