One of the most common questions from parents and teenagers: what age can you sit the theory test in Ireland? The answer depends on what you want to drive.
2026 update: TheoryTest.ie says candidates should be at least 15 years old on the date of their Driver Theory Test from 5 May 2026, and from 1 November 2026 candidates under 15 will not be permitted to sit. That does not change the learner-permit age for cars: Category B learners still need to be 17 for a car learner permit.
Minimum Age by Vehicle Category
- Motorcycle (AM/A1): 16 years old
- Car (B): 17 years old
- Truck (C/C1): 18 years old
- Bus (D/D1): 21 years old
Most people reading this want a car licence, so the magic number is 17. You can book and sit the theory test on or after your 17th birthday. If you’re 16 and want to get a head start on a moped or motorcycle, you can take the Category AM/A1 test right now.
Can You Book Before Your Birthday?
Appointment availability changes by centre and date. Check the official booking service for current availability; Queue Jumper monitors supported practical-driving-test centres and cannot guarantee an earlier slot.
What ID Do You Need?
On test day, you need one form of photo ID. Accepted options include:
- Valid passport (Irish or foreign)
- Irish Public Services Card with photo
- National identity card (EU/EEA)
- Irish driving licence or learner permit
A school ID is not accepted. If you don’t have a passport, the Public Services Card is the easiest option — apply through your local Intreo office. See our full ID requirements guide for details.
How to Prepare at 16–17
You don’t need any prior driving experience to pass the theory test. It’s all knowledge-based — road signs, rules of the road, safe driving practices. The test is 40 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes, and you need 35 correct to pass.
The best approach:
- Start with a free practice test to gauge your starting level
- Study the topic guides — road signs are the quickest win
- Take at least 3 full mock tests before your real test
- Use the Road Signs game to memorise signs fast
The RSA Annual Report 2024 records 144,708 passes from 207,089 delivered theory tests across categories (69.9% aggregate). That figure is not a first-attempt, car-only or county pass rate.
After You Pass
Once you pass the theory test, you can apply for your learner permit at your local NDLS centre. Your theory test certificate is valid for 2 years, so don’t wait too long.
