You can take the Irish car theory test with a voiceover in 21 languages. The questions appear on screen in English and you listen to them through headphones in the language you chose. The test itself is also offered in Irish.
The list below comes from the official Driver Theory Test announcement of 1 December 2025, checked on 29 September 2026.

The voiceover applies to the BW test, which covers cars, tractors and work vehicles. It is offered at all test centre locations.
What the Voiceover Does and Does Not Do
- It does: read the questions and answers to you in your language.
- It does not: translate the text on screen. That stays in English.
So you still need to recognise English road terms. It helps a lot to practise in English before the day, so the words on screen are familiar when you hear them explained.
How to Book a Voiceover
- Book online at theorytest.ie. You are asked whether you need a voiceover.
- Choose your language from the dropdown menu. It is saved to your booking.
- If you book by phone on 0818 606 106, say at the start of the call that you need a language voiceover.
You must book using an Irish address, and the name on the booking must match your ID.
My Language Is Not on the List
Hindi, Tagalog, Yoruba and many other languages are not among the 21. If your national language is not available, you can request an in-person translator. The official support page sets out the rules:
- The translator translates the questions and answer options only. No other help is allowed.
- The test takes place in a separate room in selected test centres.
- You must send a completed declaration form and a request form.
- It can take up to 25 business days to arrange an appointment.
Can You Take the Test in Irish?
Yes. Theory tests are provided in the Irish language for categories A, B, C and D. If the test category name is displayed in Irish when you book, the test is delivered in Irish. See taking the theory test in Irish.
Other Support
There is also an automated English reader, self-service dyslexia support, Irish Sign Language video clips, extra time and separate rooms. Some are chosen when you book and some need a phone call in advance.
How to Prepare if English Is Your Second Language
- Take the free 10-question test to see how much of the wording you already follow.
- Learn the signs with the road signs game. Signs need very little English.
- Read the study guides for Irish rules such as speed limits and penalty points.
- Do short daily sessions in practice mode, then a timed mock test.
The car test is 40 questions in 45 minutes and you need 35 correct. If you moved here with a licence from another country, read whether you need the theory test at all.
To find a test centre, see the theory test town pages. Dublin has four centres, listed on the Theory Test Dublin page.
