If you fail the Irish theory test, you can book again. There is no limit on the number of attempts, the car test fee is €45 each time, and the official advice is to wait at least 3 complete business days before you re-sit so that you have time to revise. Here is what to do, in order.
Step 1: Read Your Score Report
Your pass or fail result is shown on screen at the end of the test. You are also sent a link by email to your score report. If you cannot find the email, you can look the report up on the Prometric report lookup page with your confirmation number and last name.
The report shows the category areas where you answered correctly or incorrectly. It does not list the questions you got wrong. The official reason is that those exact questions are unlikely to appear in your next test, so you are expected to revise the full range of material.
Step 2: Decide Whether to Ask for a Rescore
If you believe the result is wrong, you can request a rescore by phoning the candidate service team on 0818 606 106. You must appeal within 10 days of your test and the fee is €15. For most people the better use of the time is revision.
Step 3: Book Again
- Where: the official booking service on theorytest.ie
- Fee: €45 for the car or motorcycle test, the same as the first time
- When: leave at least 3 complete business days, as the official FAQs advise
- Which centre: any centre you like. Appointment times differ between centres, so look at more than one
Pick a date you can prepare for. You can reschedule free of charge up to 7 calendar days before the test, so booking first and studying towards the date is a safe plan.
Step 4: Change How You Study
Listen to me. If you prepare the same way, expect the same result. Do this instead:
- Start with the category areas your score report marked as weak. Drill them in practice mode.
- Then cover every other topic. The questions are picked at random, so the next test will not look like the last one.
- Review each mistake until you can explain why the right answer is right.
- Sit timed 40-question mock tests. The real test gives you 45 minutes, and you need 35 correct.
- Go back to the test centre when you are scoring 35 or more in every mock.
On the day, remember you can skip a question and come back to it, and you can change an answer. Arrive 30 minutes early with the required ID.
Does Failing Affect Anything Else?
A failed attempt is not a certificate, so there is nothing to expire. When you do pass, the certificate is valid for 2 years from the date of the test. You need it to apply for your first learner permit. See how long the theory test is valid.
L-Plate Pass Guarantee
The Pass Guarantee applies if you do not pass the real test. Eligible Premium users, meaning those who completed at least three full L-Plate mock tests before sitting the real test, get 30 additional days of Premium under the published terms. It is not a refund.
