Start with free practice, and pay only if it shows gaps you cannot close on your own. The theory test costs €45 every time you sit it, so the useful question is which preparation gets you to 35 correct out of 40. Here is what you can do for nothing, what paid practice adds, and how to decide.
What You Can Do Without Paying

- Rules of the Road: the RSA’s guide to road rules. The official theory test site describes it as an additional resource.
- The practice session at the test centre: before the real test starts you can take a short practice session to see how the screen works.
Free practice is enough to find out where you stand. It is the right first step for everyone.
What Paid Options Add
- Official revision material: the official theory test site offers revision material to buy and says candidates should use it to prepare.
- More practice without a daily limit: paid apps let you keep going when the free allowance runs out.
- More timed mocks: the real test is 40 questions in 45 minutes. Sitting that format several times is the closest you get to a rehearsal.
- Progress tracking: a record of which topics you keep getting wrong.
L-Plate Premium costs €6.99 for a one-off 30-day pass or €14.99 once for lifetime access, and there is a 7-Day Pass at €4.99 on the web. L-Plate is independent practice. It is not the official question bank.

Paid practice costs less than one extra attempt. That does not make it a guarantee. Nothing you buy can promise a pass, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
How to Decide
- Do the free test today.
- Use the free daily practice for a week and sit a timed mock.
- If you score 35 or more in every mock, you may not need to pay for anything except the test.
- If you are stuck below 35, or the daily limit is slowing you down, paying for more practice is reasonable.
Whatever you choose, answer questions rather than only reading. The official score report shows category areas, not individual questions, so you need to know every topic, not a list of answers.
What Not to Pay For
Do not pay anyone who claims to sell the real test questions or a guaranteed pass. The questions are selected randomly from the official question bank for each test, and attempts to cheat are reported to the Road Safety Authority. A candidate caught cheating can be given a non-testing period of up to 3 months.
