The Irish car theory test lasts 45 minutes, and in that time you answer 40 multiple-choice questions. The motorcycle test is the same length. You are asked to arrive 30 minutes before your appointment, so plan for well over an hour at the test centre.

How Long Is Each Theory Test?
- Car, tractor and work vehicle (BW) or motorcycle (AM): 45 minutes, 40 questions, 35 correct to pass
- Truck (C) or bus (D): 120 minutes, 100 questions, 74 correct to pass
- Combined truck and bus (CD): 180 minutes, 140 questions, 104 correct to pass
- Bus or truck module test: 45 minutes, 40 questions, 30 correct to pass
How Long Will You Be at the Test Centre?
The 45 minutes is only the test itself. Around it you have:
- Check-in: the testing service asks you to arrive 30 minutes ahead of your test time. Staff check and scan your ID and explain how the test works.
- Tutorial: the on-screen timer allows up to 15 minutes for a tutorial before the test, where you can try practice questions.
- The test: 45 minutes for the car or motorcycle test.
- Survey: the timer allows up to 12 minutes for a survey afterwards.
If you arrive late, or without the right ID, you will not be allowed to sit the test and you lose your fee.
What Happens at Check-In?
The 30 minutes before your test are not dead time. According to the official FAQ, staff first check that you have the required ID and scan it for security purposes. If you refuse the scan, you cannot sit the test. You are also checked with a security wand for phones and Bluetooth devices, and you may be asked to turn out your pockets or roll up your sleeves. Smart glasses are not allowed in the testing room and go in your locker with your other belongings.

Tools That Help You Use the Time
- On-screen timer and progress tracking, so you always know how long is left.
- Flagging: mark a question you are unsure about and return to it from the review screen.
- Strikeout: right-click an answer option to cross it out while you narrow down the choices.
- Highlighting: highlight key words in a question.
- Headphones and voiceover at every test station, if you prefer to hear the question read aloud.
Can You Leave Early?
Yes. The official FAQ says you can exit your test at any time. There is no prize for speed, though. You can skip or mark questions and come back to them, and you can change an answer before you finish, so use spare time to re-read anything you were unsure about.
Can You Get Extra Time?
Yes. Additional time is available on request by calling the testing service on 0818 606 106 before your test. A separate room, an automated reader and other supports are listed on the official accessibility and support page.
Is 45 Minutes Enough?
It works out at just over a minute per question. If you have practised, that is plenty.
