You get your theory test result straight away: pass or fail is displayed on screen at the end of the exam. You are also emailed a link to your score report, and you can look the report up online with your confirmation number and last name.
This is how the official Driver Theory Test FAQs describe it, checked on 29 September 2026. The test is delivered by Prometric on behalf of the Road Safety Authority.
How to View Your Score Report
- By email: the link is sent to the email address you gave when booking.
- Online: use the Prometric report lookup and enter your confirmation number and last name.
If your name has a síneadh fada, type it the same way you did when you registered. The official FAQ warns that an accent and a síneadh fada look the same but are coded differently, and a mismatch stops the lookup from working.
What the Score Report Shows
The report shows the category areas where you answered correctly or incorrectly. It does not show the individual questions you got wrong. The testing service says this is deliberate: the same questions are unlikely to appear in your next test, and you are expected to revise the full range of material.
You need 35 out of 40 to pass the car or motorcycle test.
If You Passed
- Apply for your learner permit. You can apply online through the NDLS with a Public Services Card and a verified MyGovID.
- Do it within 2 years. Your certificate is valid for 2 years from the date of your test. See how long the certificate is valid.
- Do not worry about the paper. Citizens Information says NDLS staff can see your result online.
If You Failed
- Read the score report and note the weak category areas.
- Revise before you rebook. The testing service strongly advises leaving at least 3 complete business days before you resit. There is no limit on the number of attempts.
- Drill the weak areas in practice mode, use the study guides, then sit a timed mock test.
What If You Lose Your Certificate?
It should not hold you up. Citizens Information says you no longer need to present your pass certificate at an NDLS centre, and that if you have lost your score report, NDLS agents have access to an online version of your result.
Booking a Resit
A resit is a new booking at the full fee, which is €45 for the car or motorcycle test. Once it is booked, you can reschedule or cancel free of charge if your request is received at least 7 calendar days before the test date. Within 6 calendar days, rescheduling carries an administrative fee of 50% of the exam fee, and if you miss the appointment you lose the fee.
Think the Result Is Wrong?
You can request a rescore by calling 0818 606 106, Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm. You must appeal within 10 days of your exam and the fee is €15. Citizens Information says your test is then re-marked, that you receive the result within 5 to 10 working days, and that the fee is refunded if the appeal succeeds.
