The good news: you don’t have to wait. Theory test results are immediate. You’ll know if you’ve passed within minutes of finishing the test.
Immediate Results
At the end of your exam a pass or fail result is displayed on screen. You are also emailed a link to a score report, which shows:
- Whether you passed or failed
- The category areas where you answered correctly or incorrectly

If You Pass
Your pass is recorded as a theory test certificate, and you can apply for your learner permit:
- The certificate is valid for 2 years from the date of your test
- You can apply online through the NDLS with a Public Services Card and a verified MyGovID
- You do not need to bring a paper certificate: Citizens Information says NDLS staff can see your result online
If You Don’t Pass
You’ll see which categories pulled your score down. Use this information to focus your preparation for a retake. The testing service strongly advises leaving at least 3 complete business days before you resit, so you have time to revise.
How Long Is the Certificate Valid?
Your theory test certificate is valid for 2 years from the date of your test. You need to apply for your first learner permit within that time, or you’ll need to sit and pay for the test again.
