There is no single figure for how soon you can sit the theory test in Ireland. Appointment times differ between test centres, and you see the dates each centre has when you book on theorytest.ie. There are over 40 Driver Theory Test locations, so it is worth looking at more than one. This page explains how to check real dates and how to change a booking without losing your fee.
How to Check Dates at Your Centre
- Go to the official booking page on theorytest.ie.
- Choose your test category. The car test is category BW.
- Select a test centre. The booking service shows the appointment times that centre has.
- Look at a second and third centre before you pay. The official FAQs say appointment times may vary between centres.
We do not publish a table of dates by centre, because the dates change as people book, move and cancel. A table would be out of date the day it was written.
Where the Test Centres Are
The official list, read on 30 September 2026, shows centres in these towns:
- Leinster: Carlow, Blanchardstown, Santry, Dublin City, Dun Laoghaire, Naas, Kilkenny, Portlaoise, Longford, Drogheda, Dundalk, Navan, Tullamore, Athlone, Mullingar, Wexford, Wicklow
- Munster: Ennis, Charleville, Cork, Macroom, Skibbereen, Youghal, Killarney, Tralee, Abbeyfeale, Limerick, Clonmel, Nenagh, Waterford
- Connacht: Galway, Carrick-on-Shannon, Ballina, Westport, Castlerea, Sligo
- Ulster: Cavan, Donegal Town, Letterkenny, Monaghan
Centres can move. Check the address on your booking confirmation before you travel. Our theory test town pages give the address for each centre, including the four in Dublin.
Changing or Cancelling a Booking
If an earlier date appears, or you are not ready, the official rules are:
- Reschedule 7 or more calendar days before the test: free of charge
- Reschedule within 6 calendar days: an administrative fee equal to 50% of the original exam fee
- Reschedule on the day: not permitted
- Cancel 7 or more calendar days before: free of charge
- Cancel 3 to 6 calendar days before: you get 50% of the fee back
- Cancel 2 calendar days before, or on the day: no refund
If you arrive late or without the required ID you will not be allowed to test and you lose the fee. The official advice is to arrive 30 minutes before your test time.
Theory Test and Driving Test Are Separate Services
This page is about the Driver Theory Test, which is booked on theorytest.ie. The practical driving test is a different service with different centres. For practical driving-test bookings, check the official RSA/MyRoadSafety service.

Use the Time Before Your Test
